About the Editor
Dr. Catherine Farrell is a native of Co. Westmeath and is currently based at the Bord na Móna Boora offices in Co. Offaly. She graduated from UCD in 1996 in Environmental Biology (Botany and Zoology), and then undertook a postgraduate research project at the Department of Botany (now the School of Biology and Environmental Science), University College Dublin. Her research was primarily on the priority habitat Atlantic blanket bog, and the effects of industrial peat production at the Oweninny Works in North-West Mayo. There was a strong focus on restoration of peat-forming plant communities and peat stabilisation to mitigate effects on the surrounding catchments. She was awarded a doctorate in 2001, and from that time has been a peatland ecology researcher with Bord na Móna. Her main work to date has been the development and successful implementation of the rehabilitation of the Oweninny Peatlands. She is now working on land-use categorisation and after-uses of the broader industrial peatland resource. She also consults at a number of levels in Bord na Móna on environmental issues and represents the company at the national and international scientific level.
